Types of Fur

From the beginning of time fur has been used for protection against the elements to modern day fur fashion and future management of wildlife species. There are several types of furs that are used for clothing today. Please read the characteristics of the major fur types in use. Beaver

Beaver is used in two ways, natural length and sheared. Natural beaver has long wire like guard hair layered with thick soft underfur. Sheared beaver has a soft velvety even pile. It can be natural shade of brown or dyed in in several colors.

Texture: Wiry top hair, soft underfur.

Color: Natural light to dark brown, black. Sheared beaver dyed multi colors.

Popularity: Very popular, stylish.

Chinchilla

The most luxurious fur of all! Chinchilla has the softest fur to the touch. Most usage is in its natural color but can be dyed in vibrant colors which gives an exotic look.

Color: Natural grey, black and white tones. Can be dyed multi colors.

Lynx

A striking spotted fur, rare and very desirable among fashion forward buyers. Russian Lynx is most rare and expensive, Canadian and American Lynx is somewhat less expensive. Characteristics of fur such as spots, white color and markings determine the quality.

Muskrat is a small animal that is most popular with making fur hats. Its color is copper brown with a thick grey underfur. Its fur can be dyed several colors. Mostly found in the North America wild, and the more north it's found the thicker and heavier the fur is.

Rabbit

Rex rabbit fur is a thicker plush texture. It has a similar texture to chinchilla because of the super soft texture, velvety soft underfur and light weight.

Raccoon

North American Raccoon is very durable and will last a lifetime. Very strong fur as well as its leather pelt.

Dense and thick, raccoon fur makes stylish trim on collars, hoods and scarves thanks to its easy production methods and texture.

Finn Raccoon from Asia has extra-long guard hair tips that emphasize its beauty. Used for accessories, trims and garments, it can be dyed in several colors from its original natural golden tan color.

Shearling / Sheepskin

Sheepskin is used to produce sheepskin hats, gloves slippers, boots, jackets, coats, seat covers, rugs and pelts. The wool of sheepskin has excellent insulating properties and has very warm natural wear. Shearling is very durable and long lasting with proper maintenance. New production methods have improved softness, weight and color variance.
